A New Twist On Rental Scams
The latest twist in rental scams is identity theft. How it works is there is an ad placed on Craig’s list (for example) for a home for rent. Usually the rent is ‘too good to be true’. Often there are even pictures of the home, inside and out. In these types of scams the pictures are obtained on the Internet. These homes are usually for sale and therefore pictures are easy enough to obtain at an online listing site.
Then you, the unsuspecting renter, call on the ad and are told some story that the current owners live out of the area and they will consider you as tenants once they recieve your rental application. Of course the rental application contains all sorts of personal financial information just perfect for identity thieves.

Mortgage Fraud Alert
As you know home loans are often sold in the secondary mortgage market to investors. When this happens the institution that originally owned your loan no longer does. As a result you might get a letter in the mail informing you that your mortgage has been sold and payment needs to be sent to new owner and different address.
Recently scammers have used this knowledge to send out false letters to home owners that state that they are the new owners of the loan and as such payments should be mailed to them. Before sending you payments to this new address you should call the number on your last payment invoice to make sure this new owner is in fact legitimate.
